Influence of pop culture

Korean wave is a term that refers to the growing popularity of Korean entertainment, culture, food and language in other countries.

People consider Korean pop culture to be cool and trendy as it contains Asian values and sentiments. This can be seen between the years 1999 and 2006 in Taiwan, whereby there are dramatic changes in people’s attitude towards Korean culture. Korean dramas have a mixture of both youthful charm and enchantment combined with Asian Confucious beliefs that made the dramas ideal. Additionally, the dramas also provide a sense of relaxation, fantasy and romantic aspects for all ages. Drama series are broadcast in Singapore’s television channel and Korean celebrities performing in Singapore. (i.e. K-pop night) There are also shops selling products that have their pictures on it, such as clocks and files.(i.e. comics collection)

K–pop celebrities are capable of influencing the minds of teenagers. For example, when teenagers see their favourite celebrity using a phone of a particular brand, they will think that it is cool and will want to buy it. That is why some companies, like LG, choose to use celebrity endorsements to promote their products. However, there are companies that do not use celebrity endorsements to promote their products, but are still effective in advertising their products, such as Samsung.

Korean celebrities are trained to sing and dance since young to become famous singers for around 2 to 6 years. For example, Chae-rin, the leader of 2NE1, who started training to become a celebrity at the age of 13. They even undergo plastic surgery in order to look pretty/ handsome to attract more fans and thus become successful.

Hence, we can conclude that Korean dramas have a strong influence on people internationally.

Response Question
1) Why K – pop culture have a bigger influence than other pop culture?
2) How can the manager of these celebrities manage to win the heart of their fans?

Thanks
