importance of academic excellence in korea

An hyoung ha seh yo! Do you have any idea on how the education system is like? Well... Now is a chance for you to know!

Korean students want to study because they want to move into english speaking countries, hence allowing them to have a comparative advantage in unlimited educational competition, thus gaining international exposure.

Korean educational system is challenging. Being independent at an early age is definitely tough. The first part of the system is elementary school(6 years), where students do not wear uniform except during physical education. They study korean language, mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, fine arts, english, physical education and music. The second part is middle school, where the duration of lessons is just 45 minutes! They study for half a day on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
For the rest of the week excluding Sundays, they stay back in school for club activities(CCA). And do you know that before the school starts, students self- study by watching Educational Broadcast System (EBS) to be interested in technology and history.

The third part is high school, where students study a total of 11 subjects. It is surprising to know that 15 year old korean students, who produce excellent results in the area of mathematics, are the world's most literated people. This proves that korean education is world class standard. The last part is tertiary education, which is divided into Junior college (2 years) , polytechnic (1 year) and university. To enter university, students have to take a college scholarstic Ability test (su-neung). Subjects like korean language, mathematics, english, physics, social studies, science, and foreign language are tested. However. of students fail this test, they may retain for another year to score higher.

Although korean education system is regarded as fair and impartful, korean students have to memorize several pages of facts to do well in national examinations. This is indeed seriously joyless and stressful for the students leading them to attempt suicide due to the pressures of the tests. It is appalling to know that ambitious women, who want to study and achieve, are being discriminated by traditional barriers and lack of positions in the society.

Even so, it is equally important to realise that the korean government's aim is to have an educational system that allows students to be the main influence in changing the pattern of the society so that it follows up with the technology-advancing world.

Response questions:
- How do you think SKSS can improve its facilities so as to match up with those of POSCO?

- Given a chance to attend a school in korea and skss, which will you choose and why?
